Black Queens not considered favourites outside Ghana – Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has admitted that his side is not widely regarded as a favourite for this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) outside Ghana.

The Swedish tactician, who took over from Nora Hauptle earlier this year, remains optimistic about the team’s chances.

Ghana will make its first WAFCON appearance since 2018, having missed the last two editions after failing to qualify.

The Black Queens secured their return to the continental showpiece with a crucial win over Namibia in the final round of qualifiers.

“For me, it is simple to win the gold medal. You need to take it step by step and I know we are not going to be a favorite for people outside of Ghana,” Bjorkegren told 3Sports.

“There are some five nations who have a bigger chance to win it. We need to qualify from the group stage. From there, it’s three games and I know we can do it.”

Ghana has been drawn into a challenging Group C, which includes defending champions South Africa, as well as Tanzania and Mali, making their path to the knockout stages a stern test.
