Otto Addo dismisses confusion over Black Stars captain armband in Chad win

I didn’t see the Captain Armband lying on the grass- Otto Addo addresses Black Stars controversy.

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has denied claims that there was confusion over who should wear the captain’s armband during Ghana’s 5-0 win over Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The issue arose in the second half when captain Jordan Ayew was substituted, leaving players momentarily uncertain about who should take over the leadership role on the pitch.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Otto Addo insisted that the team has a clear leadership structure and that the situation was not as chaotic as it appeared.

“I didn’t see the [captain arm] band lying on the grass, so after Jordan left, somebody took it. After Thomas left, somebody took it, so everything is clear,” he stated.

The armband situation followed discussions ahead of the game about Jordan Ayew’s appointment as captain over Thomas Partey.

However, Addo dismissed any speculation of disorganization, emphasizing that the transition of leadership was smooth.

Ghana dominated the match from start to finish, taking an early lead through Antoine Semenyo before adding four more goals.

The victory moved the Black Stars to the top of Group I with 12 points from five matches.

Their next challenge will be a crucial game against Madagascar on Monday, where another win could strengthen their bid for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
