Chris Hughton: “I knew the pressure of coaching Black Stars.”

Former Ghana head coach Chris Hughton has admitted that he knew the pressure of coaching the West African country.

The former Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest manager, having served as the technical advisor of the Black Stars, replaced Otto Addo after he left his role after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on an 18-month deal.

However, Hughton failed to deliver, and after the four-time African champions suffered another group phase elimination at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that they have parted ways with the former Brighton manager.

Speaking to Voice Online in an interview, Hughton said he knew there was always pressure coaching the Black Stars.

“I knew the pressure of taking the job when I took it, and if you’re not getting the right results, then you will know about it,” he said.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) subsequently reappointed Otto Addo on a three-year deal with an option of a two-year deal as Chris Hughton’s successor.

Hughton, after being sacked as Ghana’s coach in 2024, has been unattached.
