New Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams aims to revive Ghana sports with focus on grassroots

Ghana’s new Sports and Recreation Ministry, under the leadership of incoming Minister Kofi Adams, is set to prioritize grassroots development as a key strategy for revitalizing sports in the country.

Adams’ nomination was confirmed on Tuesday in the third batch of ministerial appointments awaiting parliamentary approval.

He is expected to replace Mustapha Ussif, who served as Minister of Sports since 2021 under the Nana Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party government.

The 49-year-old holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology with a focus on Epidemiology of Parasitic Diseases and brings extensive experience in education and politics.

He aims to redirect attention to neglected areas of Ghana’s sports sector.

“If you approach the Sports Ministry with sincerity and a pure heart, you will succeed,” Adu-Boakye told GhOne TV. “Let’s return to grassroots sports and implement it effectively.

The emphasis on grassroots development comes amid calls for a shift from the nation’s traditional focus on elite-level football to broader support for sports infrastructure, talent identification, and development at the community level.

Stakeholders believe this approach could create a sustainable foundation for future success across multiple sporting disciplines.
