‘We are no longer a great sporting nation’ – Herbert Mensah on decline of sports in Ghana

Former Asante Kotoko board chairman Herbert Mensah, has declared that Ghana is no longer considered a great sporting nation.

The Rugby Africa president’s remarks came during an interview with Joy News following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a winless qualifying campaign.

This marks the first time in two decades that Ghana will not participate in the continental championship, a significant blow to the nation’s football legacy.

Mensah pointed to this failure as part of a broader trend, highlighting the country’s lack of success in other major competitions, including the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

We have to look inwardly at ourselves. A great sporting nation like Ghana is no longer a great sporting nation. You go to the Olympics, we wasted taxpayers money, you go to Commonwealth games, we’ve wasted taxpayers money.

You go to the Nations Cup (AFCON) and the amount of money that is spent, singularly on football, the political sport, is not acceptable.”
