Ghana’s 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) group rivals, South Africa, fell to a 3-0 defeat against Jamaica in an international friendly on Saturday at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex, Montego Bay.
The Banyana Banyana are preparing to defend their WAFCON title in a group featuring the Black Queens, Mali, and Tanzania.
This loss extends Banyana Banyana’s winless run to three matches, following earlier setbacks against Denmark and England.
The encounter was a rematch of their 1-1 draw before the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Playing at home for the first time since 2022, Jamaica dominated from the start. Siobhan Wilson opened the scoring in the 28th minute, with her corner kick curling directly into the net.
Khadija Shaw, returning after a year-long absence, netted twice in the 55th and 83rd minutes to seal the win.
Missing key players like Karabo Dhlamini and Thembi Kgatlana, South Africa struggled to mount any real challenge. The sides will meet again on Wednesday.
