Home-based players receive strong support from Stephen Appiah ahead of next Black Stars call-up

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has strongly advocated for the inclusion of Ghana Premier League players in the Black Stars.

Appiah argues that with the right opportunities and confidence, home-based players can significantly contribute to the national team.

During a recent appearance before the Parliamentary Select Committee, Appiah highlighted the disparity between past and present practices.

He reminisced about a time when local players frequently featured in the national team, contrasting it with the current situation where only one local player, Frederick Asare of Asante Kotoko, was part of the squad for recent matches.

“We need to give local players the chance and the confidence to play for the national team,” Appiah emphasised.

“In our time, even players who were not key figures had to fight for their positions. We had players like William Tiero pushing us, and we need to ensure that local talents are given the opportunity to prove themselves.

Appiah will be hoping to see more home-based players in the squad when Otto Addo invites players for the important games against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.
