President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo has ordered the sacking of Dr. Dodzie Numekevor, Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), with immediate effect over the withdrawal of the Baba Yara sports stadium’s license to host international matches.
The decision reportedly follows the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) withdrawal of Baba Yara Sports Stadium’s license from hosting category C International matches over poor drainage systems, poor infrastructure and poor playing pitch among others.
According to sources, President Akuffo-Addo on Monday ordered the sacking of individuals responsible for renting out the Baba Yara Stadium for a church program for six days prior to the AFCON 2025 qualifier against Angola after telling the Sports Minister Mr. Mustapha Ussif that he would be held responsible should Ghana play its African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers outside the country.
Dr. Numekevor, who had been serving as interim Director General of the NSA since February 26, 2024, after taking over from Professor Peter Twumasi, was relieved of his duty as President Akuffo-Addo, has not been satisfied with the state of sports infrastructure under the NSA’s leadership, with the closure of Baba Yara, Accra sports stadium, and Cape Coast stadia for international duties.
Dr. Dodzie Numekevor had been serving as interim Director General of the NSA since February 26, 2024, after taking over from Professor Peter Twumasi, who held the position for six years.
With the closure of all the stadia in the country to international games, Ghana FA has been directed to choose an approved venue outside Ghana to host the country’s upcoming AFOCN qualifier against Sudan in October, 2025.
