GBC has not been granted broadcasting rights to the Ghana Premier League – Dr. Randy Abbey

Dr. Randy Abbey, a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, has confirmed that there are currently no negotiations between the GFA and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) regarding broadcast rights for the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

GBC, a state-owned broadcaster, has previously sought to secure the rights to broadcast the GPL. Their most recent bid in 2019 was unsuccessful, with the rights ultimately awarded to StarTimes.

On January 8, 2019, the GFA announced StarTimes as the official broadcaster for both the GPL and the MTN FA Cup, in a long-term deal that concluded after the 2023/2024 season

Dr. Abbey clarified that while discussions with StarTimes about renewing their broadcasting contract are ongoing, GBC has not been granted TV rights.

“I am not aware of anything with GBC. The only thing I am aware of is GBC writing to the GFA requesting for rights to run radio commentary…,” he said, as quoted by Joy Sports.

“They [StarTimes] are yet to honour, so the contract is ended and there are outstanding issues from the previous one. We’ve been engaging.”
