Arsenal’s efforts to sell English-Ghanaian striker Eddie Nketiah to Marseille may face complications as the French club edges closer to signing an alternative.
Arsenal had been negotiating with Marseille throughout the summer, seeking €35 million for Nketiah.
Despite Nketiah agreeing to reduce his wages to facilitate the transfer, Marseille did not meet Arsenal’s asking price, according to FootballTransfers.
The 25-year-old has struggled for minutes in the previous season and would have been thrilled to join the Ligue 1 club.
Marseille then considered other targets, including Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko and Lens striker Elye Wahi.
This prompted Arsenal to lower their asking price for Nketiah to €30 million on a loan with an obligation to buy. However, Marseille remained interested in a deal around €25 million.
Marseille is now nearing an agreement with Lens for Elye Wahi, valued at €25 million plus add-ons. Arsenal had aimed to sell Nketiah to fund further acquisitions, having secured only David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori for a total of €45 million this summer.
