After winning the Championship with Burnley in 2023, Vincent Kompany’s team was immediately demoted from the Premier League this season; Thomas Tuchel was confirmed to be leaving at the end of the season, and the former captain of Manchester City took his position; Kompany has committed to Bayern for three years.
Vincent Kompany, the manager of Burnley, has been appointed head coach of Bayern Munich for a three-year period.
After Thomas Tuchel left at the end of the season, the 38-year-old takes his position. Bayern and Burnley agreed to a compensation price of about £10.2 million in order to appoint Kompany.
Despite having a difficult season at Turf Moor following the Clarets’ instant relegation from the Premier League to the Championship, the Belgian has decided to join the team.
Nonetheless, the former captain of Manchester City speaks German fluently and has experience in the Bundesliga from his time spent playing at Hamburg.
After several rejections in their hunt for a replacement to Tuchel, including head coach of Bayer Leverkusen Xabi Alonso, manager of Germany Julian Nagelsmann, and coach of Austria Ralf Rangnick, Bayern brought in Kompany.
After leading Burnley to the Championship title in 2023 during his two seasons in command, Kompany, who started his managerial career at Anderlecht, is leaving the team.
“We can confirm that Burnley Football Club has reached an agreement that will allow Vincent Kompany to leave Turf Moor,” a Burnley statement said.
“Although at first we were certain that we could keep our manager, the way things were going changed that made that impossible.
“We appreciate Vincent’s desire to pursue new chances and acknowledge the intrigue and grandeur of a team like Bayern Munich.
“We want Vincent to know how much we appreciate his commitment to this football club each and every day, and we wish him all the best. The stability and prosperity of Burnley FC continue to be our top priorities, and we’ll keep doing all in our power to make sure that our goal—returning to the Premier League—is accomplished.
“We have started the search for a new manager and will make an announcement in due course.”
Kompany: It’s an honor to be a part of Bayern
After the German powerhouses had their first trophy-free season in twelve years, Kompany, a four-time Premier League winner while playing for Manchester City, will try to find his winning formula again at Bayern.
He stated on the team’s official website: “I’m excited about FC Bayern’s task. Being able to work for FC Bayern, an institution in world football, is a wonderful honor.
“As a coach, you have to stay true to your personal values. I enjoy being creative and aggressive with the ball, and we need to have courage and aggression on the field.
“At this point, my main priorities are working with the players and assembling a team. When the groundwork is done, success will come.
“We were immediately on the same page in our discussions with him,” stated Max Eberl, sporting director of Bayern Munich. He expressed to us his strong desire to accept the position at FC Bayern and how much it appeals to him.
“Despite being a top player in elite international football and advancing as a coach, Vincent Kompany is both hungry and well-equipped. We hope to see greater stability in this role.”
The sporting director of FC Bayern, Christoph Freund, stated: “Vincent Kompany is the kind of coach that fits in very well with FC Bayern’s playing philosophy and identity: his teams want to play high-intensity, dominating football with a team mentality.”
“A coach with a lot of international experience, he is young and highly ambitious. He has a keen understanding of the players’ needs and knows exactly what should happen on the field. He can and will provide our team with a great deal.”
