Chelsea’s bizarre defensive and scoring stats summed up as Mauricio Pochettino’s side break record near 35-year record in thrilling Man Utd clash

Chelsea smashed their own near 35-year-old top-flight record after sealing a thrilling comeback win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

It was one of those chaotic nights in West London where the match changed its complexion several times during the 90 minutes. The home fans were elated after the Blues raced to a 2-0 lead but by the middle of the second half their joys turned to ashes with Alejandro Garnacho firing United to a 3-2 lead. But Cole Palmer’s sensational heroics deep in stoppage time once again sent the capital crowd to a frenzy as Pochettino’s troops pickpocketed United of the three points.

Although Chelsea showed extraordinary resilience and perseverance to seal a comeback win their leaky defence was once again exposed. In the last six matches, they have conceded at least two goals but still remain unbeaten as they have been spared the blushes by their forwards who have responded in equal measure by scoring 18 goals.

This made them the first top-flight side to both score 2+ goals and concede 2+ goals in six consecutive matches in all competitions since 1989. Interestingly, it was Chelsea themselves who held the record to date.

The victory also helped Chelsea return to winning ways against United after a 12-game winless streak in the Premier League which started back in 2017. Whereas, the Red Devils succumbed to their fourth league defeat in the capital this season, which is the most they have suffered since the 1989-90 campaign.
