Ivory Coast head coach sacked as Elephants face daunting qualification path

Head coach of Cote D’Ivoire’s National Men’s Football Team, Jean Louis Gasset, has been sacked according to an announcement released by the country’s football body, the FIF.

The dismissal was communicated in an official statement by the FIF following Cote D’Ivoire’s humiliating 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in the final Group A game for The Elephants.

Due to the heavy loss, the 2023 AFCON host nation ended the group phase with just a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau to show for its efforts while losing 0-1 to Nigeria.

“The contracts of coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated due to insufficient results,” the FIFA statement stated.

For Cote D’Ivoire to progress to the round of 16 stage as one of the best third placed teams, Cote D’Ivoire needs several factors to go in its favour including a Morocco win over Zambia and South Africa win over Tunisia.

Gasset’s sacking comes in the wake of Ghana’s dismissal of Chris Hughton as head coach after the Black Stars disappointing campaign in Cote D’Ivoire.

Ghana failed to win a game at the 2023 AFCON losing 1-2 to Cape Verde and drawing 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique.
