2023 Africa Cup of Nations: Angry fan attacked Chris Hughton verbally not physically – GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has clarified that Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton was only verbally attacked after their opening defeat against Cape Verde.

Following the Black Stars’ 2 – 1 defeat to the Island nation on Sunday night, the news went rife that some section of the fans have attacked Hughton.

The reports further stated that it took the help of diplomats to diffuse the situation and that the unidentified fan had been picked up by the police.

However, the GFA has stated that the alleged incident was exaggerated and had been blown out of proportion.

“The fan only expressed his displeasure over the outcome of the result and told the coach or leave the job,” an official of the FA told Citi Sports.

“There was no physical confrontation and certainly no arrest was made,” he added.

Ghana’s Black Stars are bottom of Group B with no point after the opening round of matches and next take on Egypt on Thursday, January 18th in a bid to get their tournament back on track.
