“There will be no repeat of events in AFCON 2021” – Nana Akufo Addo ahead of Black Stars 2023 AFCON participation

President of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo has urged the Black Stars to go for gold as they head to Ivory Coast for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting there will be no repeat of events in AFCON 2021.

The West Africa powerhouse endured a torrid AFCON 2021 in Cameroon, exiting at group stage after failing to beat Comoros in their final group game.

The Black Stars will be competing for the title in neighbouring country, Ivory Coast as the search for a fifth AFCON title continues.

Ghana will open their account against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, 2024 before taking on Egypt and Mozambique on January 18 and 22 respectively in Group B.

At a farewell dinner on Tuesday, Akufo Addo expressed optimism about the Black Stars chances, emphasizing there will be no repeat of events in AFCON 2021 held in Cameroon.

“Cape Verde, Egypt and Mozambique are teams that we have beaten before and I’m confident we will emerge out of the group. There will be no repeat of events in AFCON 2021in Cameroon” he said.

The Black Stars are off to Ivory Coast this morning after wrapping up preparations in Kumasi on Tuesday evening.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13 through to February 11, 2024.

Ghana have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982. However, they have experienced defeat in three finals since then, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties and Egypt in 2010, as well as a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.
