Tottenham have agreed to sign Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig with the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.
Tottenham are in advanced talks with RB Leipzig over a loan move for the Germany striker Timo Werner. Ange Postecoglou is keen to complete deals early this month as he seeks to drive his project forward.
Postecoglou’s priority remains central defence where the top target is Genoa’s Radu Dragusin, but he is also open to strengthening his front three. He identified the 27-year-old Werner as a player who would suit his tactical plans due to his pace, intensity and ability to meet the pressing demands key to Tottenham’s strategy.
Spurs have lost Son Heung-min, their captain and top scorer, to the Asian Cup for at least a month and Alejo Véliz is struggling with a knee injury.
The forward, 27, will fly to London for his medical and Spurs will cover his wages for the rest of the campaign.
Werner has Premier League experience with Chelsea after joining the Blues in a £45m move from RB Leipzig in 2020.
The German scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea and returned to Leipzig in 2022.
He has scored two goals in 14 appearances this season for the Bundesliga side, who revealed on Saturday he was not involved in their friendly match with St Gallen because of transfer talks.
Leipzig boss Marco Rose has since confirmed the forward’s imminent move to north London.
“It’s right that Timo wants to go on loan. Timo would like to go to the European Championship,” Rose told Sky Germany.
“We wish him all the best and are keeping our fingers crossed for him.”
Werner has 57 Germany caps but last played for his country in a friendly defeat by Belgium in March 2023.
He is set to return to London where he won the Champions League during two mixed years with the Blues.
Spurs are looking to strengthen their forward options with Son Heung-min away with South Korea for the Asian Cup and James Maddison still sidelined with injury.
Tottenham travel to Manchester United in their next Premier League game on Sunday, 14 January.
