Ghana’s Black Stars Shift AFCON Preparations, Cancels Johannesburg Camp

In a strategic shift, Ghana’s Black Stars will no longer hold their pre-2023 AFCON training camp in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Ghana Football Association, following a review meeting with the Management and Technical Team, announced the decision. Originally slated to open the camp in South Africa on December 31, 2023, for ten days, the team will now camp in Kumasi starting January 2, 2023.

As part of the adjustments, the International friendly against Botswana, scheduled for January 8, 2023, in Johannesburg, has been canceled. The FA plans to announce a new opponent for a build-up match as part of the team’s preparations for the tournament in Abidjan.

The Football Association clarified that training sessions will be conducted behind closed doors, with no access granted to the public and media. However, the team will organize a session specifically with the media.

The friendly match, yet to be determined, will be open to the public, followed by a post-match press conference. Ghana is placed in Group B alongside formidable opponents Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. The Black Stars will kick off their campaign against Cape Verde on January 14, followed by matches against Egypt on January 18 and Mozambique on January 22 in the other Group B fixture.
